“The Dream of Social Sciences, the Friendship of Alumni”

— The School of Social Sciences held its first

alumni celebration

 

On April 27, 2013, the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University held its first alumni celebration, as well as the establishment of the school council in the Multifunctional Hall on the fourth floor of Wenjin Hotel. It was also the 102nd anniversary of the foundation of Tsinghua University, therefore, alumni from the School of Social Sciences across the country got together to celebrate and discuss the history, as well as the future of the School of Social Sciences with the theme of “The Dream of Social Sciences, the Friendship of Alumni”. The Dean of the School of Social Sciences Li Qiang, the former leaders Hu Xianzhang and Wang Sunyu, the members of the council office, retired teachers and alumni representatives, and teachers and students of the School of Social Sciences participated in the conference hosted by the party secretary Shi Zhiqin.

The conference started with an introductory video of the history of social sciences and the establishment of the School of Social Sciences. These precious pictures brought the alumni back good old memories.

Dean Li Qiang gave a welcome speech to the alumni for their presence, and expressed his appreciation to the elders, teachers and alumni for their longstanding support and concerns about the development of social sciences disciplines. In addition, he reviewed the history of the development of the disciplines of social sciences in Tsinghua University, analyzed the mission of social sciences in modern society, and introduced the position of the School of Social Sciences in Tsinghua University and its development plans.

Hu Xianzhang, the former party secretary, pointed out that the disciplines of social science in Tsinghua University has made its contribution to China’s modernization, and now alumni of the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University should achieve greater success in the realization of the “Chinese Dream”.

Dun Shixin, Qi Jinli and Zhang Hongfu, the graduates from the 1980s, 1990s and the 21st century, gave their respective speeches. They expressed their strong feelings for the School of Social Sciences and gave their best wishes to the future development by appreciating the education of the School of Social Sciences, expressing their feelings about returning to school, and talking about the realization of the “Chinese Dream”. John Gordon, 2001 American alumni, shared his experiences and insights from the IUP Chinese project, and gave his thanks to the school for their care and support.

Liu Qinglong, faculty representative and also a faculty member of the School of Public Policy and Management shared his experience on enrollment over the past years. He also wished that the School of Humanities and the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University could get stronger and better. The vice dean of the Institute of Economics Long Denggao confirmed the important role of the alumni association in renewing the friendship of alumni and building a support network.

Zhang Jingwen, the student representative and 2012 leading talented undergraduate, expressed her appreciation to School of Social Sciences, and showed her determination to follow the role model of the alumni to fight for the future of the School of Social Sciences.

The vice party secretary Zhang Chenggang read the “Agreement on the Establishment of Alumni Association of Social Sciences”, which was approved unanimously by the School of Social Sciences’ Council on December 4, 2012.

During the free session, the university and the development of the school, the work of alumni, and other topics were discussed.

After the meeting, the students of social sciences from across the country greeted each other and celebrate the start of a new chapter in the history of the School of Social Sciences.
