Opening Ceremony Held for “Urbanization and Integration of Urban and Rural Areas” Collaborative Innovation Center

On December 7th, a formal opening ceremony was held for the “Urbanization and Integration of Urban and Rural Areas” Collaborative Innovation Center, which was led by Tsinghua University, and co-founded by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University,Central South University, and Development Research Center of the State Council. Vice President of Tsinghua University Xie Weihe, Dean of the School of Social Sciences Professor Li Qiang, Director of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Bureau One, Professor Xie Bingyu, Department of Public Management in Shanghai Jiaotong University Professor Chen Yingfang, Associate Dean of Department of Public Management in Central South University Professor Li Bin, Director of Development Research Center of the State Council researcher Ge Yanfeng attended the opening ceremony.

Vice President Xie Weihe made the first speech. Vice President Xie fully affirmed the achievements in the field of urbanization research led by the Sociology Department of School of Social Sciences. At the same time, he pointed out that less research has been done on the collaboration of the government and universities, arts and science in the field of urbanization and integration of urban and rural areas. The establishment of the Collaborative Innovation Center can integrate strengths in all aspects and promote the research on urbanization. He expected the research of urbanization and integration of urban and rural areas can make great achievements based on the cooperation and supports from all units and departments.

Director of Social Sciences Department in the Ministry of Education Ma Jiantong expressed warm congratulations on the establishment of the center on behalf of the department. He also hope to emphasize on the system of collaborative innovation, strengthen the reform of university system; lead the collaborative innovation by the reform of system, encourage the cooperation among universities, enterprises, and government sectors, and conduct important research jointly.

Professor Li Qiang from the School of Social Sciences said that various investigations as well as practices would be conducted in big cities like Beijing and other mid-sized cities after establishment of the center, urbanization of county territory economy should be emphasized and nearby and local urbanization should be vigorously promoted.

Professor Xie Bingyu from the Chinese Academy of Engineering stressed in her speech that urbanization and integration of urban and rural areas are not only about engineering and construction; there are also many other social problems involved. Therefore, the establishment of the Collaborative Innovation Center is very necessary and meaningful. She hopes that we could combine the advantages and fully cooperate to make huge contributions to our country through this platform.

Professor Chen Yingfang from Department of Public Management in Shanghai Jiaotong University suggested that useful historical experience should be applied such as the early urban studies of Shanghai city and the research of small towns around Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. After the establishment of the center, new breakthrough should be made in terms of urbanization study based on the existing research.

Professor Li Bin from Central South University suggested that through the platform of the Collaborative Innovation Center, we could make use of disciplines like metallurgy and civil engineering to explore a new model for the urbanization studies of central cities.

Researcher Ge Yanfeng from the Development Research Center of the State Council mentioned that the Ministry of Social Development dedicates to the studies of social policies, with regards to social security, labor employment, health care, and so on, which is connected closely with urbanization. Therefore, we should take this opportunity of collaboration and get things done.

 “Urbanization and Integration of Urban and Rural Areas” is both a challenge as well as an opportunity for the development of China in the present and the future decades. The pattern of urbanization will directly influence the sustainable development of China’s social economy in the future. Therefore, after the establishment of the center, we will focus on the important problems for the Chinese government to solve urgently in the field of urbanization and integration of urban and rural areas, and work collaboratively to convert the research results into effective policies, promote the development of related areas, related disciplines, and major courses, explore international academic exchange and cooperation, hold seminars and academic conferences regularly on “Urbanization and Integration of Urban and Rural Areas”, launch scientific consulting services, personnel training, as well as conversion of achievements regarding urbanization and integration of urban and rural areas, and explore the development model of urbanization with Chinese characteristics.
