2014 Opening Ceremony for New Undergraduate Students Held by the School of Social Sciences

On August 28, 2014, the 2014 opening ceremony for new undergraduate students was held by the School of Social Sciences in the multifunctional hall of Xiong Zhixing Building. The dean of the School of Social Sciences Li Qiang, and the members of the council office, faculty and staff representatives from each department attended the ceremony to welcome 91 new students and parents. Deputy party secretary Zhang Chenggang hosted the ceremony.

Sun Yi, the president of the student union of the School of Social Sciences, gave a speech on behalf of the senior students. She advised that all the new students should build a sense of ownership, absorb knowledge, and develop a collective consciousness in college. Eventually, their brightest dreams would come true in life. Liu Mengling from Chongqing delivered a speech on behalf of all the new students. She expressed their longings for college life and showed their determination in becoming students with dreams and responsibilities of the School of Social Sciences.

Professor Yan Xuetong from the Department of International Relations expressed his best wishes to all students on behalf of the teachers. He wished all students to become men of integrity and dedicate themselves to work, express more thoughts and concerns on society, history, humanity, and emotions. Professor Yan also suggested that the new students should focus on three aspects. Firstly, they should learn how to conduct, because knowledge does not always help people learn how to “conduct oneself”. There is a saying that goes “a moral person remains circumspect especially when he is alone”, that is, a man should adhere to high ethical standards even when no one is watching. Secondly, they should develop the ability to think independently. As the basis of innovation, independent thinking is to be able to distinguish right from wrong, which is more important than the ability to know. Thirdly, they should learn about science, believe in science, and develop a scientific thinking towards knowledge and society. Professor Yan also said that they are all great students, but it is a result of choices to live a fulfilling college life. He hopes to see their growth in four years.

Dean Li Qiang delivered a speech to welcome the new students and illustrated the meaning and essence of a university, quoting Mei Yiqi, former president of Tsinghua University. He said that the three major functions of a university in modern society are teaching, creating knowledge, and contributing to society. The School of Social Sciences is similar to the School of Arts and Sciences abroad, which focuses on developing students’ ability and general knowledge. Then, Professor Li introduced the discipline of social sciences in a simple but profound language. He explained that social sciences often study more complex objects than natural sciences and hoped students could learn social sciences well in order to contribute to the society as well as the academic studies.

After the ceremony, 91 new students will be prepared for the training camp starting on August 29, and the following military training. New challenges as well as rewards are waiting for them. The first class of social sciences accepted 72 students last year, and 91 new students were admitted this year; the school of social sciences is gradually growing. The 91 new students will be on the way to pursuing their dreams in the beautiful Tsinghua campus.
