2014 Opening Ceremony for New Graduate Students Held by the School of Social Sciences

The 2014 opening ceremony for new graduate students was held by the School of Social Sciences in the multifunctional hall of Xiong Zhixing Building on September 3, 2014. The dean of the School of Social Sciences Li Qiang, and the members of the council office, faculty and staff representatives from each department attended the ceremony to welcome 231 new students and parents. Deputy party secretary Zhang Chenggang hosted the ceremony.

Dong Xiaochen, the president of the graduate student association of School of Social Sciences, gave a speech on behalf of the senior students. She wished that all the new students could build a sense of ownership and absorb knowledge in Tsinghua campus to become the most outstanding students. Zhou Xi delivered a speech on behalf of all the new students. She expressed their longings for college life and wished all the student could work hard together in Tsinghua University, which is a new beginning for all of them.

Professor Yan Xuetong from Department of International Relations expressed his best wishes to all students on behalf of the teachers. He pointed out the difference between undergraduate and graduate study. The former focuses on character building and all-round development of a student, that is, “to be a moral person”; the latter pays more attention on research and creativity. He suggested that all students should develop independent thinking and look at problems from a wider perspective. In the end, he wished them to acquire the ability to conduct research, make decisions on their own, and start taking responsibility for their lives during the graduate studies.

Dean Li Qiang delivered a speech to welcome the new students. He introduced the widely discussed issue of social wealth distribution in order to illustrate the special research objectives of social sciences. He also explained the serious and academic attitude and research spirit with his research examples from Sociology. Then he expressed his expectations for the new students that students of Tsinghua University that they should shoulder the responsibility of the discipline development and the national revitalization.

Over 200 people attended the ceremony including the faculty and staff representatives and all the new graduate students of 2014. After the ceremony, they took group photos together.
