The 3rd China International Conference on Positive Psychology Held in Tsinghua University

On July 3rd, 2015, the 3rd China International Conference on Positive Psychology and the 2nd Asian-Pacific Conference on Applied Positive Psychology was held at the Hall of New Tsinghua School, Tsinghua University. The main theme is “Positive Psychology and Chinese Dream: Exploration and Contribution to Localization”. Kevin Michael Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia and President of the International Positive Education Network, Professor Martin Seligman, the “father” of positive psychology, Xie Weihe, vice president of Tsinghua University, and representatives from domestic and abroad, over 1000 people attended the meeting.

The conference was co-hosted by Tsinghua University and Children’s Foundation of China, with the guidance of the Department of Education and All China Women’s Federation, and the support of Department of Psychology, the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University. The conference combined academic research with special issues, which aims to discuss the latest discoveries and research projects in China on positive psychology, including: applying happiness education to deal with burnout, anxiety, and depression in the teaching profession, enhance students’ confidence, anti-setback ability, and academic records, and also using positive psychology to help women lead a happy life. Moreover, 7 workshops were held where the participants could learn techniques through interactive experience and feel the positive influence caused by positive psychology, including experiential learning of “the ability to feel gratitude”, training of “playfulness”, and so on. Professor Martin Seligman, the “father” of positive psychology, announced the data from the survey of the application of positive psychology in universities and armies. The results show that happiness is something we could learn, and the education of happiness could improve people’s happiness, academic records, self-discipline, and tenacity significantly.

Besides the academic exchanges, the conference also advocated the application of positive psychology in various aspects of our life, like technology, art, and tourism. The first high-tech supported “Happiness Lab” (H-Lab) was launched during the conference, which is a multifunctional laboratory co-founded by Tus-Holdings and Department of Psychology, Tsinghua University. It is also referred as “the most felicitous house in the world” that owns the most advanced technology of happiness measurement and experience, including eye-controlled, mind-controlled, human-computer interaction, and the mind reading technology. Moreover, concert and art exhibition with the theme of happiness were also held to illustrate the charm and essence of positive psychology in an artistic way. With the support of Kang Hui Travel Agency, the conference held a sub-forum of happy travelling in Nanxun, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province to explore the importance of travel in improving our happiness.

Positive psychology is a new research branch of psychology that emerged in response to challenges of the 21st century and the growing focus on happiness. As one of the most famous positive psychology research institutes, this is the third international conference that was successfully hosted in Tsinghua University. Professor Peng Kaiping, the chairman of the conference, expressed that the Chinese dream is connected with the World dream and is ultimately the dream of all people. He expected that the conference could provide a platform for exchanging ideas and sharing wisdom for Chinese and foreign scholars, and more people could learn about the development of positive psychology in China and create a happier life.
