“2016 Big Data Social Science Training Program” Held at Tsinghua

From August 24 to 27 of 2016, “2016 Big Data Social Science Training Program” was held at Tsinghua University. This program was co-held by the Institute for Innovation and Development of Tsinghua University, the Institute of Economics of Tsinghua University School of Social Sciences, the Department of Political Science of Tsinghua University School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University Data Management Research Center and Tsinghua University Institute of Quantitative Analysis. The training program aims to grasp the frontier trends of big data technology application in academic and business areas, improve students’ abilities to handle data, and strengthen their awareness to use data so as to further promote the popularization and extensive application of big data methods in the study of social sciences. Following two similar events in 2014 and 2015, this program is the 3rd one held by units of Tsinghua. By centering around big data and social science methodology, big data frontier application and big data frontier trends, the training provided profound analyses and explanations in simple terms for nearly a hundred students.

What’s more worthy of attention is that this training was funded by JUSFOUN BIGDATA and established “Tsinghua- JUSFOUN” awarding program for creative topics on big data and social science, offering attractive scholarship for 25 excellent students. Students may attend related defence and appraisal activities after submitting their big data-based research design. The scholarship is divided into three levels of prizes, the first prize being RMB 8,000, the second being RMB 5,000 and the third RMB 2,000.

The four-day training have deepened students’ understanding towards big data and social science, extended their knowledge about specific process and technical tools to study big data and social science, and enhanced their consciousness and initiative in using big data. Related units of Tsinghua University will summarize the experience to better hold such training activities in the future and continue to advance the development of big data and social science in China.
